The author Bill Bryson dubbed it “a perfect little city” and it’s a fair comment – Durham, just south of Newcastle, is stunning.

Set in the north-east of England its’ maze of winding cobbled streets surround the city’s two jewels – the awe-inspiring Romanesque cathedral, a masterpiece of Norman architecture, and the huge castle overlooking the River Wear – both it and the Durham Cathedral are designated as World Heritage Sites.

They combine to give Durham one of the most beautiful city panoramas in Europe and a city that houses the United Kingdom’s finest cultural and historic sites.

Durham represents the definitive English city with a lost-in-time feel, yet still has a distinctly modern vibe with a vibrant cultural scene that includes great cafes to people watch from, boutiques, galleries and museums.

As well as the sights, Durham has an impressive array of shopping, from quirky craft shops sitting alongside top-name brands.

For eating and drinking you are spoiled for choice, from a home-made cream tea in a traditional tearoom to a quick bite in a chic café-bar or gourmet dining in a posh restaurant whatever your tastes you will not go hungry.

Hunger sated, the bill of entertainment in the evening is also impressive, from theatre to side-splitting comedy shows, action films to art house cinema, and a nightlife fuelled by the students who flock to study at Durham University.
